We want to take a moment to honour the person who started it all. More than twenty years ago, Clarence Wiens and a small group of local trail runners were out on the trails when Clarence asked a simple question: “What about a race?” He scouted the route, knocked on landowners’ doors for permission to cross their property, and found business friends willing to cover the losses if the first race didn’t break even. And when no two GPS watches could agree on the distance, he gave us our name: thirty kilometres, give ‘r take. Since that first race in 2002, Around the Lake has grown into a sold-out event that gives back thousands of dollars to local outdoor groups and scholarships for Chilliwack students. This year, after more than 25 years of volunteer service to this race and to Chilliwack’s trail community, Clarence has stepped away from the organizing committee. If you see Clarence out on the trails, be sure to thank him for this legacy.
At this time, we are unsure of the race course for next year. Several of you have donated generously to a fund to build a new trail as a portion of our existing route will now be closed to public traffic. The process to create a new route has numerous costs involved, and we’d like to extend a big thank you for your donations. We will not be accepting any additional funds at this time as the use of these is unknown at the moment. Any proceeds from the race are donated back to our community. More information about donations will become available in the coming months.
We ask that you respect the wishes of the Plummer Family and no longer run through their private land adjacent to the Monastery. They have generously allowed us to use this through way to Robinson Road for the past 20+ years and now plan to develop this land. We are in discussions with the district and continue to look for an alternative route. Please stay posted!!
Mark your calendars for next year, October 16th, 2027 – we’re keeping our fingers crossed we will have a new route in time.
See you on the trails!
